This page explains my approach to privacy on all my websites and how it affects you.
- I collect anonymous statistics about your visit, such as which of my web pages you viewed.
- Some 3rd parties like Facebook and Twitter may know you visited this website, if you use their services. We can’t control them but we don’t believe this knowledge poses any threat to you.
- If you sign up with me I take great care to keep your information safe and will never share it with others without your express permission.
- I never share your data with 3rd parties except to help me deliver my own services.
- These are just the key points. If you would like further details, please read on...
Measuring my visitors
I measure visitors to our website using Google Analytics. This records what pages you view within the site, how you arrived at the site and some basic information about your computer. All of that information is anonymous – so I don’t know who you are; just that somebody visited my site.
The information I collect from analytics helps me understand what parts of my sites are doing well, how people arrive at the site and so on. Like most website owners, I use this information simply to make the website better.
Facebook, Twitter and other social networks
These services provide social buttons and similar features which I use on my website – such as the “Like” and “Tweet” buttons.
To do so we embed code that they provide and I do not control myself. To function, their buttons generally know if you’re logged in; for example Facebook use this to say “x of your friends like this”. I do not have any access to that information, nor can I control how those networks use it.
Social networks, therefore, could know that you’re viewing this website if you use their services (that isn’t to say they do, but their policies may change). As my website is remarkably inoffensive I imagine this is not a concern for most users.
What are the advantages of cookies?
A cookie contains information linked from a web browser (the user) to a specific web server (the website). If a web browser accesses that web server again, the web server can read the last information processed. Cookies ensure a user-friendly experience for many online offers and services – e.g. language preferences, privacy settings, shopping baskets on online shops, relevant adverts etc.
What cookies do I use?
Google analytics: This is to generate statistical information as described above. The information is NOT personally identifiable.
Can I control cookies?
Yes. Web browsers offer cookie management settings, usually found in the browsers tools option. Users can delete specific cookies and it is even possible to set a browser to reject all cookies. However, choosing to disable all cookies could significantly affect your web browsing experience as many Internet services rely on them.
If you sign up for a service
When you sign up for any of my services – paid or otherwise – I will record specific personal information about you, such as your name and email address.
I will also collect and store information about your use of our services so as to improve them. For example, I keep a log of what features are being used at any time.
I also log account and transaction history for accounting purposes and to monitor my business activities.
I may send you information which you have specifically requested (such as newsletters or special offers), which you can opt out of at any time.
I will never provide your personal information or email address to any third parties except where they are specifically employed to help deliver my own services, as detailed above.
I take many precautions to prevent the loss, misuse or alteration of your personal information. These precautions include:
- Use of SSL encryption for sensitive data
- Hardware stored in secured datacentres behind firewalls
- All access to information restricted by password and/or secure key
- Restrictions to what information can be accessed via any location
Whilst I take great care to ensure any confidential information remains protected, I cannot guarantee the security of data sent over the Internet.
Of course, you are responsible for keeping your passwords and user details confidential. I, or anyone genuinely acting on my behalf, will never ask you for your password, so please don’t trust anybody asking you for it.
